Two cars collided in Summit Township Monday afternoon, sending one of the drivers to the hospital.

The crash happened at 4:53pm at the intersection of 900th Street and 1350th Avenue. Effingham County Sheriff’s Office reported a vehicle driven by 77-year-old Betty Wise of Effingham was traveling south on 900th Street, attempting to turn east onto 1350th Avenue. A second vehicle driven by 54-year-old Matthew Jones of Effingham was headed northbound on 900th Street. Another unit was sitting on the west side of the intersection at a stop sign.

Wise told deputies that she was watching the vehicle sitting at the intersection and did not see Jones’ vehicle when turning. In the resulting collision, the Wise vehicle spun around and was pushed into a ditch, coming to rest on the passenger side.

Wise was injured and was taken by Rural Med EMS to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham. Jones refused treatment.

Wise was cited for failure to yield right of way at the intersection.
