The Illinois Department of Transportation announced the closure of U.S. 40 beginning March 16 between Cumberland Road and South Jefferson Street in Cumberland County for a bridge replacement project over the Embarras River.

A detour will be posted directing traffic to Interstate 70 utilizing Illinois 130 in Greenup and Spring Creek Road in Montrose. This project will improve safety and the smoothness of the pavement along U.S. 40 for the traveling public. The project is expected to be completed in November.

Motorists are encouraged to follow the posted detour and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and obey the posted speed limits.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve more than 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide on 7,897 miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
