WAYNE CITY — So close . . . Brownstown/St. Elmo’s hopes of a berth in the Class 1A Arcola Super-Sectional came to a close Thursday evening.
The Bombers fell to Edwards County (Albion) in the championship game of the Wayne City Sectional by a 50-44 count.
Edwards County came roaring out of the chute with a 13-9 opening quarter lead in the Class 1A Wayne City Girls Basketball Sectional Thursday.
The Lions moved into a 10-0 lead before Brownstown/St. Elmo could find the range as Madi Miller hit a basket.
Alice Robb connected on a three-pointer while Grace Bishop and Lola Nussmeyer added five points each for the Lions.
Dayana Haslett hit two baskets and a free throw to lead the Bombers with five points. Miller connected on a basket and Addie Sasse two free throws.
It didn’t take long for the Bombers to get over the nerves and get their scoring going.
Miller connected on three baskets and two free throws for eight while Haslett hit three baskets for six and the Bombers had pulled within 25-24 at halftime. They had tied the score at 16-16 and 18-18 but a run by the Lions got them back on the upper side of the scoring.
Nussmeyer was the power at the basket for the Lions with two more baskets and three free throws for seven.
The Bombers came roaring out of the locker room after halftime to go on a 6-0 run to lead 30-25. That lead went to seven points as Danika Ramsey scored for a 32-25 lead.
But, Edwards County wasn’t out of the game. The Lions cut the lead to 33-32 at the end of the third quarter on a 7-1 run.
The lead stood at 35-34 with a little over seven minutes in the final period. The Lions then went on a 6-0 run and pushed into a 40-35 lead.
Edwards County took advantage of a turnover to lead 43-35. But, once again, here came the Bombers as Ramsey connected on a layup and they were within 43-39. With a little over three minutes remaining in the contest, the Lions led 46-42 after Haslett was fouled and put in three free throws.
BSE then had to foul to regain possession but the Lions put in their free throws to push their lead to 48-42. Williams hit a basket with over 20 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 48-44. But Edwards County connected on another free throw to lead 49-44.
The Bombers put up several three point attempts but none fell in the final moments of the contest. Edwards County was fouled in the final seconds to hit a free throw for the 50-44 final.
Haslett finished with 18 points to lead the Bombers while Miller chipped in with 14.
Edwards County moves on to the Arcola Super-Sectional Monday to face Mount Pulaski in a 6 p.m. contest.
