(EFFINGHAM CITY PLANNER GREG KOESTER DISCUSSES FUTURE LAND USE MAP AT THURSDAY NIGHT’S COMPREHENSIVE PLAN MEETING)

Work on the 2050 Effingham Comprehensive Plan, as far as the public is concerned, began at the 2024 Cruise Night. Attendees filled out cards with input on what should be included in the new plan.

Since then, a series of meetings have taken place to gather additional input and to flesh out the plan, which will likely be adopted by the City Council in a few weeks.

A gathering was held Thursday evening featuring the Council, the Plan Commission, the Zoning Board of Appeals, and members of the steering committee that has met periodically to help with the document.

Considerable time was spent on housing and the cost of development. Other items drawing attention were the need for skilled tradespeople, a need for additional electricity in some portions of the city, and the vibrancy of the motel community and the revenue it generates for Effingham.

The discussion also focused on the look of Effingham and the safety and service it provides both to local residents and to visitors to the community.

Weather permitting, City Planner Greg Koester plans to be at City Hall on Saturday morning with a draft of the plan for those who couldn’t attend last night. Another session is planned next Thursday night from 6-7:30pm at City Hall.
