 Dieterich Hands EHS Boys Basketball Loss, St. Anthony Beats Shelbyville

DIETERICH — Dieterich High School took the opening quarter lead and handed Effingham a 54-45 loss in boys basketball competition Tuesday evening in a game heard on 979XFM.

The Movin’ Maroons’ Bryce Bohnhoff connected on a three-pointer and a regular basket while Gavin French and Jackson Icenogle put in a three each as the Maroons led 13-7.

Max Buzzard hit a three-pointer for Effingham in the quarter.

The lead went to 24-15 at halftime. Bohnhoff and Icenogle put in four points each for the Maroons.

The Hearts were led by Brady McDaniel with five points.

The Maroons continued pounding home points, opening up a 41-23 third quarter lead.

Brock Niemerg, who had three points by halftime, hit a regular basket, a free throw and a three-pointer for six while Icenogle connected on two more three’s and Gavin Meinhart put in one from beyond the arc in a 17-8 run.

Effingham came back in the final period with a 22-13 run but it was too little, too late.

The Hearts’ Jake Niebrugge hit four of five free throws and a basket for seven points while McDaniel connected on a three and two free throws and Ian Kinkelaar and Jude Traub a three-pointer each.

The Maroons took care of business in the final period from the free throw line. They hit nine of 12 from the free throw line and Ezra Cook hit two baskets.

Dieterich had three players finish in double figures. Icenogle scored 15 points on eight field goals, four from three-point range, and three of four at th line. Bohnhoff added 13 and Niemerg 12. The Maroons hit 47.2 percent from the field and 70.6 percent at the line. They were 61.5 percent from three-point range.

Effingham was led by McDaniel with 10 points on three field goals, two from beyond the arc, and two of three at the line. The Hearts hit 32.6 percent from the field and 71.4 percent at the line. They were 29.4 percent from three-point range.

In junior varsity play, Effingham won 65-40. Dagg Thompson led the Hearts with 30 points while Maxwell Love added 11.

Dieerich was led by Iffert and Meinhart with seven each.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony tallied an easy victory over Shelbyville by a 59-38 count Tuesday evening.

The Bulldogs ripped out to a 14-2 opening quarter lead as Freddie Jansen hit three baskets and a free throw for seven points while Miles Waldhoff put in five.

The lead went to 31-13 at halftime. Waldhoff hit three from beyond the arc for nine while Keenan Griffith connected on two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight as the only two scorers in the quarter.

The Bulldogs had a 17-14 third quarter lead. Griffith added on five more points and Aiden Lauritzen put in five.

St. Anthony finished with two players in double figures. Waldhoff connected on seven field goals, five of those from three-point range for 19 points. Griffith added 17 on seven field goals, three of those from beyond the arc.

St Anthony was a 72-34 winner in junior varsity play. The Bulldogs were led by Will Bierman with 21 and Connor Storm with 12.

In freshman/sophomore play, St. Anthony won 40-15. Logan Gowin scored 13 for the winners.
