 T-town Girls Win at Highland Tourney, Newton Falls To Marshall In Little Illini Conference Meet

HIGHLAND — Teutopolis High School put together a 59-36 victory over Highland in the 39th Annual Apex Network Physical Therapy Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes moved into a 15-8 opening quarter lead as Anna Probst connected on three baskets for seven points while Sophia Martin hit a three-pointer and Kelsey Niemerg put in three points on a basket and a free throw.

The lead went to 25-13 at halftime. Probst hit another three and Malea Helmink put in a three.

Both teams broke loose in the scoring department in the second half. T-town had a 22-18 third quarter surge and finished out with a 12-5 final period.

Allie Ruholl, who didn’t score in the opening half, put in four baskets and a free throw for nine and Martin connected from beyond the arc again.

Three players hit double figures for the Shoes. Probst tallied on six field goals for 14 points while Helmink and A. Ruholl added 11 each.

Helmink pulled down eight rebounds. Allie Ruholl had six steals.

In other games, Life For Life defeated Edwardsville 60-41, Glenwood won over Okawville 53-29, Nashville trounced Belleville Althoff 63-17, Centralia beat Belleville East 50-26, Breese Mater Dei edged Bethalto Civic Memorial 59-57, Breese Central downed Carlyle 66-24 and O’Fallon ended the day with a 59-31 win over Troy Triad.

Coach Laurie Thompson’s team is back in action at the tournament tonight and will face Nashville at 7 p.m.

At Marshall

Newton fell to Robinson in opening round play of the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday, 44-41.

The Maroons took a 13-7 opening quarter lead and still led by that same margin 24-18 at halftime.

Newton made a comeback with a 15-8 third quarter run to move into a 33-32 lead going into the final quarter. But Robinson came back with a 12-8 run for the victory.

Newton was led by Alani Bergbower with 20 points on seven field goals and five of six at the line.

The Eagles dropped to 13-8 on the season.

In other games in the tournament, Paris won over Casey-Westfield 53-21, Mount Carmel trounced Marshall 65-33 and Olney downed Lawrenceville 57-32.

The tournament continues today as Casey-Westfield and Newton meet at 6 p.m. followed by Marshall against Lawrenceville at 7:30.
