Cumberland Wins Three Times At Vandalia Holiday Tournament

VANDALIA — Cumberland High School played three times at the 53rd Annual Vandalia Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament Friday and Saturday.

In the opening contest Friday, Cumberland defeated Macon Meridian, 62-34.

The Pirates opened up a 22-8 first quarter lead and never looked back with a 34-15 halftime tally.

Isaac Venatta scored 20 points and got the Pirates out to the big lead, scoring 11 in the first quarter and 17 by halftime.

Reed Miller finished with 14, scoring 10 in the third quarter.

Cumberland then tallied a 62-40 win over Shelbyville. The Pirates edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead and led 29-23 at halftime.

Cumberland had a 33-17 second half run. Chase Stewart led the way for the Pirates with 18 points while Cameron Roedl added 16 and Venatta finished with 11.

The lone game Saturday was a 56-44 win for the Pirates over Pana.

Roedl got the Pirates off in the right direction, scoring eight of his team’s 14 first quarter points.

Cumberland led 31-24 at halftime. In the third quarter, Miller scored 12 of the team’s 14 points as the Pirates led 45-35 going into the final period.

Miller finished with 19 points on six field goals and six of seven at the line. Also in double figures were Roedl with 11 and Venatta with 11.

Cumberland returns to action today in a pool contest before the finals.
