A dump truck was struck by a Canadian National Railroad freight train in Teutopolis Township during the noon hour on Friday.
The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred at 12:48pm at 15325 E. State Highway 33.
The dump truck driven by 58-year-old Mechelle Eaton of Mattoon was traveling southbound and crossed over an unmarked crossing on private property. The westbound train struck the dump truck near the cab on the driver’s side, causing the dump truck to leave the roadway and come to rest parallel to the railroad tracks on the northwest side of the crossing. Neither the locomotives nor the train cars derailed.
Due to the crossing being on private property, there are no crossing arms or lights.
Eaton was injured and was taken by Rural Med EMS to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham. No citations were issued.
