 St. A Edges Dieterich In Two Overtimes In Boys High School Basketball Friday

DIETERICH — Effingham St. Anthony trailed Dieterich 18-9 after the opening quarter in a boys high school basketball game heard on 979XFM Friday evening.

Brock Niemerg hit two three-pointers and was four of four at the line for 10 points in that opening run. Jackson Icenogle put in five points and Gavin French hit a three-pointer.

The Movin’ Maroons still held a six point lead at halftime, 28-22. Bryce Bohnhoff scored five points and Ezra Cook knocked in a three-pointer.

But the game was about to get very interesting as the two teams battled to a 45-45 tie sending the game into not one, but two overtimes before the Bulldogs pulled out a 67-60 victory.

St. Anthony came back with a 12-5 third period run to move ahead 34-33 going into the final quarter. Miles Waldhoff scored seven points in the third period run while Jonny Gannaway added four.

Dieterich came fighting back in the final period. Cook hit two baskets and three free throws for seven points while Icenogle connected on three of four from the free throw line and the score was knotted at 45-45 sending the game into the first overtime period.

Both teams tallied eight points in the overtime and the game went into the second overtime period.

St. Anthony’s Keenan Griffith hit a three-pointer and was five of six at the line for eight points while Waldhoff and Freddie  Jansen connected on two baskets each and Blake Verdeyen put in two free throws as the Bulldogs had a 14-7 run to pull out the victory.

Three players hit double figures for the Bulldogs who remained unbeaten in the National Trail Conference. Griffith hit six field goals and was eight of 12 at the line for 23 points. Waldhoff added 13 points and Aiden Lauritzen 11. Griffith and Waldhoff pulled down 12 rebounds each.

The Bulldogs hit 46.2 percent from the field and 50 percent at the free throw line. They connected on 21.1 percent from three point range.

St. Anthony improved to 4-0 in the National Trail Conference and 5-4 overall.

Dieterich was led by Cook with 16 on six field goals and three free throws. Niemerg and Icenogle put in 15 points each. Cook also led the team in rebounds with eight while Niemerg had six. Dieterich hit 40.5 percent from the field and was 65.5 percent at the free throw line.  They were 33.3 percent from three-point range.

The Maroons dropped to 3-1 in the National Trail Conference and 5-3 overall.

In junior varsity play, St. Anthony claimed a 38-25 victory. Cooper Sehy led the Bulldogs with 12 points while Alex Mayer added nine.

Dieterich was led by Schottman and H. Niemerg with six each.

In a freshman/sophomore contest, St. Anthony won 41-37. Charlie Hoene scored 15 for the Bulldogs.

Dieterich was led by Schottman with 12.
