Although Effingham St. Anthony shot better, Effingham High School put together a 56-49 victory in girls basketball at the Enlow Center Thursday evening in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.
The Hearts edged ahead 12-8 in the opening quarter. Riley Engel and Tessa Raddatz put in a three-pointer each for the Hearts. Averie Wolfe connected on two of two at the line and McKenzie Love hit a basket.
Ali Kollman scored four of the eight points for the Bulldogs. The top scorer for the Bulldogs, Nancy Ruholl, was held scoreless through the first half with Effingham’s defense focusing on her.
The Hearts continued on with a 14-7 second period to lead 26-15 at halftime. Alyssa Martin got on track with four of five from the field for eight points for the Hearts.
EHS still had the edge in the third quarter with a 17-15 run to lead 43-30 going into the final period. Wolfe put in six points with a shot from beyond the arc and an old-fashioned three-point play with a field goal and free throw. Martin hit a basket and was two of four at the line for four and Drew Weis knocked in a three-pointer.
Ruholl started back with two baskets and a three-pointer for seven in that third quarter while Addie Lauritzen chipped in with four points.
Ruholl finally broke loose in the final period as St. Anthony went on a 19-13 run. Ruholl hit three baskets that included a three-pointer and was six of six at the line for 13 points.
Raddatz kept the Hearts going with a three-pointer, a regular basket and a free throw for six points. Wolfe put in two of two at the line.
Ruholl ended the game with 21 points and had six assists. Lauritzen led in rebounds with eight.
Three players finished in double figures for the Hearts. Martin led with seven field goals and three of four at the line for 17 points while Raddatz added 13 and Wolfe 10.
The Bulldogs hit 36.7 percent from the field and 71.4 percent at the line. Effingham was 33.3 percent from the field and 64.7 percent at the line.
St. Anthony dropped to 7-4 on the season while Effingham improved to 11-1.
