NEWTON — Effingham High School captured the championship of the Bob Kerans Girls Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Friday.
The Hearts finished with a 3-0 record followed by Newton 2-1, Altamont 1-2 and Flora 0-3.
Effingham handed Newton a 67-40 loss to win the title.
The Hearts took a 14-9 opening quarter lead and led 29-18 at halftime. EHS came out with a 23-14 third quarter run to put the contest away.
Three EHS players hit double figures. Averie Wolfe led the way with 25 points on 10 field goals, three of those from beyond the arc, and two of two at the line.
Also in double figures were Alyssa Martin with 12 and Drew Weis with 10.
EHS hit eight three-pointers in the contest led by Wolfe with three while Weis added two, Ryley Engel 1, Martin 1 and Tessa Raddatz one.
Newton was led by Allie Hermann with 15 points on six field goals and three of four at the line.
Game five went to Altamont over Flora by a 49-40 count.
Flora edged out to an 11-10 opening quarter lead and led 24-23 at halftime.
Altamont then came out in the second half and went on a 17-5 third quarter run as Ada Roberts, Avery Aldrich and Sophia Long hit for four points each.
Flora came back with an 11-9 run in the final period but it was too little, too late. Adilyn Schnarre finished with 12 points to lead the winners while Aldrich added 11.
