Jay D. Nelson, 63, of Jewett, passed away at 7:30 p.m. on Monday November 24, 2025, at his residence, due to esophageal cancer.
Graveside services will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday November 28, 2025, in the Hazel Dell Cemetery. The visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup.
Jay was born on February 2, 1962, in Effingham, IL to Joseph and Mary (Graham) Nelson. Jay married Gidget in 2018 and enjoyed many years together.
Survivors include his son Matthew (Tanja) Nelson; daughters Racheal (Ryan) Tipsword and Theresa (Nina) Nelson; grandchildren Mason Tipsword (Chloee), Marshall Tipsword, Isaac Tipsword, Wyatt Tipsword, and Alaina Tipsword; great grand children Cash Carver, and Baby Tipsword due in Spring of 2026; and siblings Tony (Lynne) Nelson, Jodie (Mike) Kuhring, and Kurt Nelson. Jay was Poppy to Tripp and best friend to his dog Sammy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and sister-in-law Linda Nelson.
Jay worked many jobs throughout his life. He worked the oil rigs off the Gulf of Mexico, was a factory worker, and in recent years he helped with day-to-day operations of Nelson Quality Gates. He had many hobbies including Nelson Farms, buying and trading animals, and going to auctions.
