NEWTON — Effingham and Newton opened play at the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament with victories Monday evening.
Effingham ran out to a 14-3 opening quarter lead on Altamont and led 28-5 at halftime.
The Hearts had a 21-12 second half for a 49-17 victory.
Alyssa Martin led EHS in scoring with 17 points on eight field goals and one of one at the line. Tessa Raddatz chipped in with nine points on three trifectas.
Altamont was led by Alyssa Ruholl with four points.
In the second contest, Newton handled Flora by a 62-31 count.
The Eagles ripped out to an 18-6 opening quarter lead and led 36-11 at halftime.
Allie Hermann led the way for the Eagles with 18 points on nine field goals. Grace Schumacher had 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.
The tournament continues Wednesday with Effingham against Flora at 6 p.m. and Newton and Altamont squaring off at 7:30.

At Mount Carmel
In a regular season girls basketball contest, Teutopolis edged Mount Carmel by a 46-40 tally Monday evening.
The Golden Aces moved into an 11-5 opening quarter lead on the Shoes and led 21-14 at halftime.
But the Shoes mounted a big four-quarter comeback to take the six-point victory.
In that comeback, T-town’s Jersey Gaddis hit a three-pointer and was four of four at the line for seven points while Kelsey Niemerg hit a basket and was four of six at the line for six points. The Shoes finished that quarter with 13 of 16 from the free throw line and the game with 20 of 29 from the gratis stripe.
Niemerg led the way with 16 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven of 12 at the line. Also in double figures was Anna Probst with 10 points.

Marshall picked up a 53-33 victory over Neoga in a game played at Lake Land College Monday evening.
The Lions ran out to a 15-4 opening quarter lead and led 29-13 at halftime.
Welborn scored 20 for the winners while Heighton added 13.
Leading Neoga was Malory Henderson with 12 points and Chloe Frankie with eight.
Neoga drops to 1-1 on the season and will host the Mary Sur Tournament this Friday and Saturday at Emerald Acres in Mattoon.
Neoga was a winner in the junior varsity contest 41-38.
