 St. Anthony Boys Basketball Turkey Tournament Opens Play

Effingham St. Anthony opened play in its own boys basketball Turkey Tournament by suffering a 51-34 loss to Edwardsville Monday.

The Bulldogs moved into an 11-6 opening quarter lead as five different players scored. But that lead was short-lived.

Edwardsville came back with an 11-4 second period to move ahead 19-15 at halftime.

St. Anthony never could recover as the Tigers continued on with a 14-12 third quarter and an 18-7 final period.

Edwardsville had three players in double figures. Miccah Butler led the way with 18 points while Brady Niemi added 13 and Devyon Hill-Lomax 10.

The Tigers hit nine three-pointers led by Butler with four and Niemi with three and finished with 47.4 percent from beyond the arc.

St. Anthony did not have a player in double figures. Aiden Lauritzen led the way with nine points while Keenan Griffith added eight.

The Bulldogs shot 34.9 percent for the game while Edwardsville shot 60 percent.

In the opener, Breese Central defeated Normandy by a 68-28 count.

Breese Central was led by Burgmeier with 17 points. Normandy was led by Harrell with eight.

Tonight’s games include Effingham against Chicago Leo at 5 p.m., Normandy vs. Rantoul at 6:30 and Mattoon taking on Breese Central at 8. The Effingham game can be heard on KJ Country 102.3.
