The alleged driver of a van in a crash that resulted in the death of a Coles County Board member will remain in custody for now.

A motion for pretrial release for 34-year-old Edwin Pacheco-Meza was denied so he will remain in Clark County Jail until his preliminary hearing on November 17.

Pacheco-Meza is charged with reckless homicide and five other counts for a crash on October 24 that resulted in the death of Michael Clayton and his wife, Gail, both of Charleston, along with injuries to two other occupants of a pickup truck in Westfield.

Allegations that Pacheco-Meza is in the country illegally have heightened interest in the case.
