Area firefighters were dispatched just after 11:30am Sunday to a residential structure fire at 20520 E 1300th Avenue in rural Teutopolis. Enroute, C600 reported a large header and upon arrival requested a Full Still Alarm – Tenders from Montrose FPD, Dieterich FPD, Engine from Watson FPD, Chief from Montrose, Rural Med EMS were all on scene, and a change of quarters (move-up) from Effingham FD and Edgewood FPD.

C600 provided a size up of the attached garage heavily involved and advancing in to the residence. Firefighters deployed multiple attack lines on the exterior and advanced attack lines in to the residence as the fire was in the attic. Exposures on the north side of the garage included a residential propane tank and a tank of fuel oil. The fire had weakened the north wall to the point of potentially collapsing on both. Both tanks were exposed to heat and Firefighters worked to keep them both cool. Aerial operations was utilized on the garage to reduce further involvement to the residence.

Although the fire advanced in to the attic space, much of the contents in the residence was salvaged. C600 reported the fire was under control at 12:32 hours. The garage is a total loss. A trackhoe was requested to the scene to remove the metal roofing and siding in order for Firefighters to further extinguish hot spots. Firefighters cleared the scene at 14:53 hours. No injuries. The fire was called in by a neighbor. Owners arrived on scene and will be staying with family members.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Teutopolis Fire District and the State Fire Marshal.
