STAUNTON — Effingham High School opened play in the Staunton Regional with a decisive 8-1 win over Robinson Wednesday.
“Overall the team played a great game,” said EHS Coach Logan Arney. “We controlled the flow of the game for the majority of the game.
“Andrew Wagoner had a strong game ending with a hat trick and two assists. Jake Niebrugge and Connor Delong both scored two goals each. Maicol Sefton scored a goal. Luis Gonzalez and Gage Kinder added an assist each. Brady Wilson had one save.
“I’m happy with our performance tonight. This team has the talent and now the opportunity to win the first regional championship in EHS soccer history. It won’t come easy, but if we play strong as as team, we can make history for another time this season.”
In the other match, Staunton downed Greenville by a 5-1 count.
Effingham and Staunton will now meet for the regional championship Saturday at 10 a.m. The winner heads to the Effingham Sectional Tuesday, October 28.
