Deb’s Catering and The Giving Plate in Altamont suffered major damage overnight Sunday due to fire.
The fire affected a number of other operations. In addition to disrupting upcoming catering events, Deb’s provides meals for many Meals on Wheels operations in Effingham County. Meals on Wheels will be contacting us once their plans are in place.
Altamont Fire Chief Jon Becker said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Becker said the fire started in the garage storage area. One freezer and one cooler unit were also damaged. Fire crews were able to relocate company vehicles. A trackhoe and backhoe were moved to gain access to the building.
Firefighters from Altamont, St. Elmo, Brownstown, Tri-County at Beecher City, Edgewood, Effingham, Watson and Stewardson were called to the location at 9 Do It Drive on the south end of Altamont at 11:40pm Sunday. Teutopolis firefighters staffed the Altamont station. Also assisting were Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, A-1 Ambulance and Rural Med EMS, and the Altamont Police Department. Becker said there were no injuries.
The Schultz family is assessing the damage and planning their next steps. They will be issuing full refunds for all current Giving Plate orders and fundraisers.
