The former three-story Central Hotel in Kinmundy, built in 1893 and long ago converted to a home, was destroyed by fire early Friday morning.
Kinmundy-Alma Fire Chief Kevin Day says a neighbor first spotted the fire at the now vacant home at 201 South Monroe. He was first on the scene and found the portion of the home above the front porch already collapsing, and fire across the attic and roofline. The remains of the home were eventually pushed in.
Salem Firemen provided mutual aid by bringing their aerial truck to be able to direct water to the top of the home.
The home, owned by Nancy Reckling’s estate, had been vacant for several years. Electric and gas were still connected to the home. Day believes the fire was electrical in nature.
The fire call came in at 3 a.m. on Friday. Some firemen remained at the scene throughout the day Friday to put out hot spots.
