Geraldine “Geri” M. Althoff, 83, of Effingham, IL, passed away on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at Heartland Senior Living in Neoga, IL.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Green Creek with burial in St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday prior to service at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church. Online condolences may be shared by clicking here.

Geraldine was born on February 27, 1941, in Island Grove, Jasper County, IL, the daughter of Raymond and Clara (Cohorst) Koebele. She married James Robert “Bob” Althoff October 1, 1960; together they celebrated nearly 65 years of marriage. Geri was a member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Green Creek, where she belonged to the Council of Catholic Women. Geri worked as a cook at Effingham Junior High School, Effingham High School, and Green Creek Grade School. She loved to spend time with her friends and visit her sister in Colorado. She enjoyed gardening and canning as well as attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. Geri liked to gamble and visit casinos with her friends and her sisters. She was also a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Fighting Illini. Geraldine is survived by her husband, Bob Althoff of Effingham; sons, Paul (Angie) Althoff of Effingham, Jerry Althoff of Effingham, Phil Althoff of Effingham, Pat (Becky) Althoff of Effingham; daughters, Deb (Randy) Rennels of Sigel, and Linda (Bill) Overton of Altamont; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Millie Grasselli, Stell (Bob) Smithenry, Ruth Jansen, and Gene (Janet) Koebele; and brother-in-law, Richard (Mary) Althoff. She was preceded in death by her parents; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Mary Margaret Althoff; infant brother, Clete Koebele; brother, George Koebele; sister, Dee Bierman; and brothers-in-law, Louis Bierman, Franco Grasselli, and Rich Jansen.
