Effingham Hearts won the Charleston Invitational Volleyball tournament on Saturday.
Effingham scored pool play wins over Carbondale 20-25, 25-17, 15-9; Okaw Valley 25-12, 25-11; and Mattoon 25-17, 25-22.
The Hearts then matched up with the Wooden Shoes who had also played their way into the championship game with three pool play victories over Charleston 25-13, 25-19; Highland 25-15, 25-10; Decatur MacArthur 25-15, 25-16. That set up an epic championship that Effingham won by scores of 23-25, 25-22, 25-23.
Effingham is now 11-6 on the season and Teutopolis is 12-4
Madison Miller of Teutopolis, McKenzie Love and Berkley Pullen of Effingham were voted to the All-Tournament team.
St. Anthony and Newton both took part in the St. Anthony invite.
The Bulldogs picked up pool play wins over Shelbyville 28-26, 24-26, 15-13; Father McGivney 25-18, 25-23; Mt. Zion 25-14, 18-25, 15-9.
St. Anthony lost to Newton in the crossover 25-20, 22-25,15-13 which put the Bulldogs in the third place game which they lost to Shelbyville 25-17, 25-15.
Newton gained pool play wins over Unity 25-17, 25-18 and Triad 25-19, 30-28. The Eagles then lost to Waterloo 20-25, 20-25.
After the crossover victory against St. Anthony, Newton again faced off with Waterloo for the championship but lost 21-25, 28-30 to finish in second place.
Newton is now 11-10 while St. Anthony is 12-4.
Cowden-Herrick/ Beecher City, South Central and North Clay all competed in the Vandalia Tournament Saturday.
In pool play North Clay lost to Carlyle 25-16, 25-12; Salem 25-22, 25-10; and CHBC 17-25, 25-12, 15-13. Prior to the victory over North Clay, CHBC fell to Salem 25-9, 25-13; and Carlyle 25-9, 25-13. South Central had pool play wins over Vandalia 25-19, 25-18; and East Alton/Wood River 25-17, 25-16, and a loss to Hillsboro 29-27, 16-25, 13-15.
The Cougars then played for third and fell to Carlyle 14-25, 21-25. Vandalia defeated CHBC in the fifth place contest 25-22, 25-14, and North Clay defeated East Alton Wood River for seventh 25-14, 25-14.
Cumberland participated in the New Berlin Tournament over the weekend.
They suffered losses to the host school 25-20, 25-19; and Carlinville 25-22, 25-20; but bounced back to win the copper bracket with victories over Southeast 25-16, 18-25, 15-7; West Central 25-22, 30-28; and North Mac 25-19, 25-19.
Cumberland is now 7-10-1 on the season.
Dieterich was in the Flora tournament and saw their record fall to 5-12 after three losses to Flora 25-22, 25-23; Christ Our Rock Lutheran 25-8, 25-21; and Cisne 25-21, 25-22.
