Effingham High School handed Newton a 6-3 loss in tennis competition Monday.
The Eagles took the top two singles matches but Effingham finished with four victories.
Elle Keller won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-2 while Ava Rogers took a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 spot.
Addy Hemrich and Emma Krause had to battle for victories at No. 5 and No. 6.
Hemrich won 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 while Kraus lost the opening set 7-5 but came back with 7-5, 10-7 victories for the win.
Newton’s Jailyn Hall was a winner at No. 1, 6-0, 6-1 while teammate Olivia Sornberger took the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles play, Newton’s Hall and Sornberger combined to win. They claimed the opening set 6-3 but Effingham’s Eva Wendling and Cora Hartmann came back to take the second set 6-4. Hall and Sornberger then won the match 10-8.
Rogers and Hemrich combined at No. 2 to take the win 6-0, 6-4. Meanwhile, Keller and Knaus were 6-4, 7-5 winners at the No. 3 position.
