A Newton resident faces charges after an investigation that involved Jasper and Fayette County authorities.
Fayette County and St. Elmo Police Officers responded to an address on Cherokee Strip in Brownstown just before 9:30 Wednesday morning. Authorities were seeking the whereabouts of 31-year-old Carl T. Cornett, who was being sought for criminal sexual offenses involving a child.
Cornett was wanted out of Jasper County on an original charge of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. Fayette County deputies made entry into a residence where Cornett was located in the crawl space of the residence. Another individual, 30-year-old Whitney K. Lowe, was arrested for harboring a fugitive and for resisting arrest. Cornett and Lowe were taken to Fayette County Jail.
Cornett was transferred to Jasper County Jail, where he was ordered held without release. Cornett faces two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child as well as a count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. He is due in court for a preliminary hearing on September 18.
Lowe is next due in court on October 14.
