Mattoon firefighters handled a structure fire early Friday morning.
Firefighters were called just before 6am to 1417 Piatt. They arrived about five minutes later to find a single-story structure with smoke showing. All occupants were out of the structure but told the firefighters that two cats were still inside. A crew made entry to the structure and found a fire in the kitchen area.
Both cats were located and were safely removed from the structure. Crews contained the fire to the kitchen within five minutes, then ventilated the house to remove any smoke.
The fire is still currently under investigation, but is considered to be accidental in nature. No injuries were reported. Firefighters cleared the scene just after 7:30am.
Mattoon firefighters were assisted by Coles/Moultrie 911, Charleston Fire Department, Mattoon Police Department, and Ameren gas and electric.
