The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs did some wheeling and dealing right before the trade deadline Thursday.
The Cardinals sent Phil Maton to the Texas Rangers for Minor League pitchers Mason Molina and Skyler Hales along with International Draft pool money.
The trade came after the Cardinals had dealt Ryan Helsey, a two-time All-Star closer and reliever-starter Steven Matz Wednesday. The Cardinals got four Minor League players in those deals.
The Cubs acquired Willi Castro, a utility man, from the Minnesota Twins for two prospects. They also picked up left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers in a deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Chicago added Mike Soroka and Andrew Kittredge in different deals Wednesday.
To make room on the active roster, Ryan Pressly was designated for assignment. Pressley was a closer for the Cubs when the season opened.
