The Effingham County Board’s Legislative Committee Monday recommended the full board take part in an opioid settlement agreement with Purdue Pharma.
Purdue Pharma has already approved the settlement, now Effingham County can seek a share of the settlement funds.
The goal is to participate in the settlements with additional opioid defendants, and to fund programs to help individuals end their addictions.
Board members also voted to endorse a loitering offense for those who would like to move onto county property.
County Board Chairman Josh Douthit said the goal is to maintain County grounds without being overly restrictive.
Committee members also recommended appointment of new city police chief Kurt Davis to replace retired Chief Jason McFarland.
All three measures approved by the committee will go before the full board at next week’s meeting.
