One crash along Illinois Route 16 east of Mattoon led to another Thursday afternoon, and fatalities occurred in each crash.
The first crash occurred at 5:43pm at the intersection leading into the airport steak house. Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers said a vehicle driven by 84-year-old David Greeson of Neoga pulled from the airport roadway onto Route 16 into the path of a semi. Greeson was killed in the collision. The semi driver was not injured.
Greeson before his retirement was a longtime official at Lake Land College.
The crash closed the eastbound lanes of Route 16 from Lerna Road to the entrance to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center. An IDOT truck being used to block the roadway was rear-ended by a pickup truck and both vehicles burned.
The driver of the pickup truck, 61-year-old Charles Clinard of Mattoon, was killed in that collision. Schniers said the driver of the IDOT truck had exited the vehicle just minutes before the collision and was not harmed.
