Altamont resident Charles Beavers pleaded guilty Tuesday to a count of residential arson.

The 60-year-old Beavers was arrested in January of 2024 by Altamont City Police. Beavers was charged with setting fire to a building in Altamont, knowing that people were inside the building at the time.

In court Tuesday, Beavers pleaded guilty to a new count of residential arson in exchange for dismissal of counts of aggravated arson as well as possession of methamphetamine.

Beavers was placed on four years’ probation, but will serve 180 days in jail. He must undergo drug testing, substance abuse and mental health treatment.
