CARBONDALE — It’s on to the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament for Teutopolis as the Wooden Shoes pulled out a 6-5 victory over DuQuoin to win the Class 2A Carbondale Super-Sectional Monday.

The two teams went through the first three innings without a scoring a run.

Coach Justin Fleener’s crew then started their comeback in the fifth inning. Gavin Addis drew a walk. Aidan Niemerg hit a bloop single to left field as he was jammed. Dawson Hoene then hit a little fly ball to center that the DuQuoin centerfielder couldn’t find and it dropped.

With the bases loaded, runners couldn’t advance because they were sure the centerfielder would catch the ball. Davin Worman then hit into an RBI 6-4 fielder’s choice and the Shoes had hit the scoreboard at 5-1. Runners still stood at the corners. Mick Niebrugge hit  a sharp RBI single to left field and runners were at first and second. Jason Kreke hit a comebacker to the mound and the pitcher threw to second to start a double play, but the second baseman overshot the throw to first and Kreke was safe, Worman scored from second and the Shoes stood within 5-3.

Then came the fateful bottom of the seventh as the Shoes still trailed 5-3.

Worman was hit by the first pitch. Mick Niebrugge then hit a one hop RBI double off the left field wall on an 0-1 pitch and the Shoes were within 5-4. Kreke then hit a fly ball on the first pitch to right centerfield and the centerfielder got under the ball and dropped it. It was still a 5-4 game with two runners on base.

Pinch hitter Teagan Pals came up and hit the first pitch he saw over the centerfielder’s head and the two RBI triple scored Niebrugge with the tying run and Kreke with the winning run all the way from first base.

In the second inning, Austin Borries got hurt attempting to steal third base. He tried to come back into the game but only lasted two innings as he was injured. Caleb Deters came in to play third base for three innings. He grounded out twice and Coach Fleener pinch-hit with Pals in the seventh and the Shoes came up winners.
