VANDALIA — Newton High School’s softball team is headed to the Class 2A Carbondale Super-Sectional after claiming a 1-0 victory over Columbia to win the Vandalia Sectional Friday.
Newton edged Columbia 1-0 with the lone run coming in the third inning.
Newton had only two hits in the contest while Columbia finished with three. Allie Hermann had a single and Addy O’Dell hit a single scoring the lone run of the contest.
Amelia Collins tossed a three-hitter, with two walks and one strikeout.
Columbia had three hits, all singles by Elle van Breusegen, Reagan Jarrard and Reese Jarrad. Emily Webb picked up the pitching loss, going six innings, allowing one run on two hits, one walk while striking out four.
Newton improved to 26-2 on the season and has now won back-to-back sectional titles.
The Eagles will now face Carterville, a 4-1 winner over Anna-Jonesboro in the Murphysboro Sectional.
Newton will head to the Class 2A Carbondale Super-Sectional at Southern Illinois University Monday to face Carterville at 6 p.m. The winner will then head to the 2A State Tournament.
