A Coles County man has been given a lengthy prison sentence for the murder of his mother.
31-year-old Douglas R. Reed of Gays was sentenced Tuesday to 58 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Another count of murder and a count of obstructing justice were dismissed.
Reed reportedly admitted to Mattoon city police at the time of the incident in February that he struck his mother several times in the head with a hammer.
The incident occurred in Mattoon. Reed then fled the area in his mother’s vehicle. He was located in Moultrie County by Mattoon police.
Once out of prison, Reed will serve three years of mandatory supervised release.
