 Teutopolis Downs St. Anthony, Altamont Blanks CHBC, Newton Wins In Softball Regional Action

TEUTOPOLIS — Teutopolis struck early and earned a spot in its own Class 2A Softball Regional championship game.

The Wooden Shoes played host to Effingham St. Anthony and captured a 6-1 victory in a game heard Wednesday on KJ Country 102.3.

The Bulldogs put a runner on base in the first inning as Camille Wines drew a walk but she was left stranded.

T-town then took charge in the bottom of the inning. Jersey Gaddis led off with a single and Malea Helmink drew a walk. Olivia Wermert reached base on an error. CJ Apke then followed with a single that drove in Gaddis and Helmink. Kylie Borries was hit by a pitch. Kayleigh Zerrusen got on base on a fielder’s choice. Lauryn Shue singled to bring Apke home and the Shoes held a 3-0 lead.

That stood until the top of the third when St. Anthony tallied a run. Emeline Wines drew a walk and took second on a wild pitch. The Shoes then got the next two batters out before C. Wines hit a single that scored E. Wines.

The Shoes then tallied two more runs in the fourth. Shue drew a walk and Chloe Hoene followed with a single. A sacrifice by Kera Hartke pushed the runners over and they both came home on a double by Helmink,

The final run of the contest came in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, T-town’s Zerrusen hit a double and came home on a single by Shue in the next at-bat.

T-town had a total of seven hits. Alyssa Tipton tossed a five-hitter with four walks and two strikeouts.

The Shoes were led by Gaddis with a single and double, Helmink with a double and two RBI, Zerrusen with a double, Shue with a single and two RBI and CJ Apke with a single and an RBI. Kylie Borries had an RBI.

St. Anthony’s Wines had two singles and an RBI while Jackie Vonderheide, Ella Johnson and Wines had a single each.

Teutopolis advances to the championship game Friday and will meet Marshall at 4:30 p.m. Marshall had edged Paris 1-0 in a Tuesday contest.

At Stew-Stras

Altamont blanked Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 5-0 in the Class 1A Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Regional Wednesday.

Grace Lemke tossed her seventh no-hitter of the season and 11th for her career. She went seven innings, giving up four walks while striking out 20.

Lemke has thrown eight shutouts this season and 16 in her career. She has 407 strikeouts this season and 1,156 for her career and has a 0.460 ERA this season and 1.900 for her career.

The Indians stepped out to a 3-0 opening inning lead then added on two more runs in the second. That was all the scoring for the game.

Altamont had two hits and Lemke had one of those, a single. Ella Nelson had a single that drove in both runs.

The Indians will now take on a familiar team for the championship. They will face National Trail Conference opponent Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg for the regional title Friday at 4:30 p.m. The Hatchets had bounced St. Elmo/Brownstown by a 15-0 count Tuesday.

Class 1A Windsor/Stew-Stras Regional

Class 1A Hutsonville Regional

Hutsonville/Palestine tallied a 6-3 victory over Oblong Wednesday.

That pushes Hutsonville/Palestine into a meeting with National Trail Conference’s South Central at 5 p.m. Friday for the regional championship.

South Central had easily won over North Clay/Clay City 18-2 in a Tuesday game.

 

Class 2A Flora Regional

In games that had been weathered out from Tuesday, Newton blanked Lawrenceville 10-0 and Flora was a 2-0 winner over Breese Mater Dei Wednesday.

The Eagles edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead, then added on three in the second, two in the third and finished the game in the fifth with four more.

Newton’s Allie Stanley had two doubles and two RBI while Avery Mulvey had a single, double and two RBI and Addy O’Dell a single, triple and four RBI.

Amelia Collins was the winner on the mound. She went all five innings, allowing no runs on five hits, one walk and striking out one.

Newton and Flora will now square off for the regional championship Friday at 4:30 p.m.
