 Hearts Win Softball City Series Over Bulldogs, Cougars, Bobcats Nab Wins

Effingham High School had a seven-run second inning and went on for a 12-2 victory in five innings to clinch the City Softball Series Thursday.

Both teams had runners on in the first inning but couldn’t bring them home. Then the Hearts broke free with a seven-run second inning.

Mya Harvey led off the frame with a single, took second on an error and stole third. Maci Hayes followed with a single and stole second.  Alyssa Martin singled to bring home a run. Madi Kirk drew a walk. With one out, Jerzi Bierman singled and Ryley Engel followed with a double scoring three runs. Sidney Donaldson then hit a two-run homer.

Addy Rios covered second on a steal during the inning and suffered a broken bone in her leg. Rios was taken to St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

The Bulldogs tallied a run in the bottom of the frame. Jackie Vonderheide reached on a fielder’s choice. Ella Johnson singled and Nancy Ruholl followed with a single that brought Vonderheide home.

The Hearts tallied two more in the third for a 9-1 lead. Hayes led off with a single but was taken out on a fielder’s choice on a grounder hit by Martin. Martin then stole second. Saige Althoff singled and St. Anthony committed two errors.

They finished out with three runs in the fifth. Hayes led off with her third single and Martin followed with her second single. Kirk then singled home a run. With two outs, Engel singled the other two runners home for a 12-3 lead.

St. Anthony tallied in the fifth. With two outs, Lilly Gannaway singled and came home on a double by Julia Schultz.

The contest ended in the fifth via the 10-run rule.

The Hearts finished with 13 hits. St. Anthony had six hits and committed four errors.

Engel had a single, double and five RBI for the Hearts while Donaldson had a home run and two RBI. Hayes added three singles and Martin two singles and an RBI. Bierman had two singles and Kirk a single and an RBI.

Armstrong went the distance for the Hearts, giving up two runs on six hits, one walk and striking out seven.

The Bulldogs were led by Schultz with a single, double and an RBI and Ruholl with a single and an RBI.

The two teams return to play today at Effingham High School’s softball diamond at 4:30 p.m.

At Farina

South Central finished with 12 hits and tallied a 12-6 victory over Dieterich Thursday.

The Cougars edged out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning then tacked on two in the third. Dieterich pulled within 3-1 in the fourth and tied the score in the top of the sixth.

South Central went on a run in the bottom of the sixth with nine runs and held on for the win.

The Cougars had 12 hits led by Kaitlyn Swift with three singles, Maddie Peddicord with a single, double and an RBI, Perci Reid with a double and two RBI, Amelia Montes with two singles and two RBI, Abi Shuler with a single and two RBI, Kinlee Thompson with two RBI and Lauren  Johnson with a single and an RBI.

Peddicord went six innings, giving up six runs on eight hits, two walks and striking out five.

Dieterich was led by Kinley Will with three singles and an RBI, Lucie Jansen with a double and two RBI, Allison Boerngen with a double, Brittney Niemerg with two singles and Lydia Wohltman with a single and two RBI.

At Farina

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City tallied a 14-4 win over Martinsville in six innings Thursday.

The Bobcats had five-run innings in the third and fourth and ended the game with four in the sixth.

Macee Rodman had a double and drove in three runs while Addison Wasson had a triple and two RBI. Jordyn Wright finished with two singles. Birgen Schlanser, Bryleigh Prater and Allison Shields had a single and an RBI each.

Wasson went the distance on the mound. She give up four runs on five hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out six.

At Cowden

North Clay/Clay City fell to Lawrenceville by an 11-1 count Thursday.

North Clay is back in action today against Dieterich at 4:30 p.m.
