Four people were taken for treatment after a crash Thursday afternoon in Effingham County.

Effingham County sheriff's deputies report a car driven by 27-year-old Dustin Smith of Louisville was traveling eastbound on US Route 40, slowing in traffic for a vehicle waiting to turn north onto 900th Street, west of Funkhouser in Jackson Township. A car driven by 22-year-old Gavin Wilkerson of Brownstown struck Smith's car from behind, forcing the Smith vehicle off the highway and down into a ravine.

Smith was injured, as were his passengers, 25-year-old Natasha Smith, four-year-old Waylon Smith and two-year-old Avalyn Smith. The passengers are all from Farina. All four were taken for treatment to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Wilkerson was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash and for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Dustin Smith was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

The crash happened at 2:42pm.
