Effingham High School edged Effingham St. Anthony High School 8-7 in junior varsity baseball competition Thursday.
The Bulldogs held a 1-0 opening inning lead. The Hearts then came back with a six-run fourth. St. Anthony pulled within 6-2 in the fifth but EHS tallied two more in the top of the seventh. St. Anthony then charged at the Hearts in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs but fell a run short.
Carter Kalber and Aidan Feldhake had two singles each for the Hearts while Wyatt Hayes added a double and two RBI, Jacob Warner a double and one RBI, Will Hecht a single and an RBI, Andrew Leonard a single and two RBI and James Wendt an RBI.
St. Anthony had six hits. Eric Utz and Chase Dorris had a double and two RBI each and Will Bierman and Jonny Gannaway a single and an RBI each.
Wendt was the winner on the mound. He went five innings, allowing two runs on three hits, three walks and striking out seven.
