Altamont, Newton, SEB, North Clay Nab Boys Basketball Wins, Neoga Drops Loss

Altamont played host to Hillsboro in boys high school basketball action Friday night and handed the visitors a 59-36 loss.

The Indians ran out to a 24-10 opening quarter lead. Cooper McManaway put in two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight while Blake Berg added five and Zaine Miller four.

The lead went to 33-16 at halftime. Carson Milleville connected on a three-pointer for Altamont in the second quarter.

The Indians then had a 16-12 third quarter to lead 49-28 going into the final period. McManaway hit three baskets for six points while Kade Milleville and Jacob Johnson scored five each.

Altamont finished out with a 10-8 final period.

McManaway ended with 18 points to lead the way in scoring. He hit seven field goals, two from beyond the arc, and two of two at the line. K. Milleville tallied 13.

In junior varsity play, Altamont was a 64-40 winner. Leading the Indians were Blake Berg with 16, Kaiden Wolff with 15 and Hayden Bridges with 11.

At Newton

The homestanding Eagles edged out to a 14-7 opening quarter lead on Charleston and went on for a 53-36 victory Saturday.

Newton held a 37-23 halftime lead and outscored the Trojans 15-11 in the third quarter.

Drake Wolf led the way in scoring with 15 points on seven field goals, one a three-pointer. Also in double digits were Kody Bergbower with 11 and Jacob Oldham with 10.

Newton improved to 7-6 on the season.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown broke a 17-17 opening quarter lead with a 23-12 second period run and went on for a 76-58 win over Grayville Saturday.

Four players hit double digits for the Eagles. Jayden Hughett led the way with 23 points on 10 field goals, three of those beyond the arc. Graiden Wilhour added 18 while Benji Lowe had 11 and Dodge Willms 10.

Hughett led in rebounds with nine and had two blocked shots. Willms led in assists with six.

St. Elmo/Brownstown moved above .500 with a 7-6 record and returns to action Tuesday at Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville.

At Louisville

North Clay handled Vandalia to the tune of 80-66 in Saturday action.

The Cardinals ran out to a 26-24 opening quarter lead when Mason Byers hit a three-pointer and three regular baskets for nine.

Vandalia came back with a 23-14 second quarter run to pull within 40-37 at halftime. The Cardinals’ Byers tallied seven points while Lucas Griffey added five.

In the third quarter. North Clay had a slight 13-11 edge to lead 53-48.

Vandalia attempted a comeback with a slight 18-17 edge but it was too little.

North Clay had four players in double figures. Byers led the way with nine field goals and six of six at the line for 26 points. Griffey added 18 while Cody Zimdars finished with 17 and Carder Walden added 13.

North Clay also claimed the junior varsity game, 46-44 and won the freshman/sophomore contest, 34-27.

The Cardinals are back in action today against Fairfield.

At Mattoon

This game went overtime before Shelbyville claimed a 52-48 win over Neoga in a game played at Lake Land College.

Neoga took the opening quarter 13-11 lead as Kaden Bryant put in nine points on three baskets and a free throw. Bryant continued on with six more points in the second period as the two teams played to an 8-8 tie. Neoga led 21-19 at halftime.

Shelbyville came back with a 16-8 third period to pull ahead 35-29. Aden Hardy connected for eight points to lead the Rams

Neoga came roaring back with a 14-8 final quarter run to tie the score at 43-43, sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Rams had a 9-5 run for the victory.

Neoga was led by Bryant with eight field goals and two free throws for 18 points. Also in double figures were Malik Coy with 12 and Brayden Ray with 11.
