 Stewardson Trinity Wins Two Volleyball Tournaments

NEWTON — Stewardson Trinity won the Newton St. Thomas Eighth-Grade Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

The tourney also included Dieterich, Newton St. Thomas, Mattoon St. Johns, West Salem and Paris Crestwood.

St. Thomas defeated Dieterich, St. Johns won over West Salem, St. Thomas downed Paris Crestwood and Trinity defeated St. John’s.

For third place, St John’s downed Paris. Trinity won over Newton St. Thomas for the championship.

“I was very pleased witih the way my girls played,” said Trinty Coach Tammy Manhart. “They worked so well together. They are a lot of fun to watch. Gia Bostedo had a great day serving, scoring 37 points in two matches.”

Trinity’s sixth grade team competed in a tourney at Stew-Stras Saturday with a total of eight teams that included Stewardson-Strasburg, Neoga, Shelbyville, St. Elmo/Brownstown, Cumberland, Sullivan and Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond.

Trinity defeated Neoga 25-11, 25-5 then won over Shelbyville 25-7, 25-9. In the championship match, Trinity downed Stewardson-Strasburg 25-12, 25-17.

“My young girls are solid servers and passers which is the foundation of good volleyball,” said Coach Manhart. “I am proud of the girls’ aggressiveness and teamwork in the tournament.”
