NEWTON — Stewardson Trinity won the Newton St. Thomas Seventh-Grade Volleyball Tournament during the weekend.
Stewardson Trinity and Paris had a first round bye.
Newton St. Thomas beat Effingham St. Anthony, Albion won over Dieterich, St. Thomas downed Paris and Trinity won over Albion.
Albion defeated Paris for third place while Trinity beat St. Thomas for the championship.
“My girls got off to a good start,” said Trinity Coach Tammy Manhart. “Our team is young with three seventh-graders and five sixth-graders. In both matches the girls did a great job of serving consistently and aggressively. They managed the ball when it was on our side doing a great job of keeping the ball in play.
“St. Thomas came out strong in the second set of the championship with their first server earning eight straight points. I am proud of how my girls stayed calm and just kept working hard. Once we broke that serving streak, we were able to battle back into the game and win the match in two sets.”
