Effingham captures the championship of its own Class 2A Volleyball Regional.
Effingham High School put together two good sets to win the championship of the Class 2A Volleyball Regional.
The Hearts hosted the regional, taking down crosstown rival Effingham St. Anthony Tuesday in the opener and defeating an always tough Teutopolis team, 25-21, 25-19 in the championship match Thursday evening.
“We played great defense and Berkley Pullen did an awesome job putting it right where our hitters want it,” said EHS Coach Laurie Bohnhoff. “And Love was unstoppable.”
The Hearts were led by Mckenzie Love with 17 kills, Berkley Pullen with 23 assists and one ace and Averie Wolfe with eight digs.
“Effingham played an excellent match,” said Teutopolis Coach Tim Mills. “I wish them well in the sectionals.
“We finished the season with a record of 25-10 and only our 2018-19 team had a better record at 26-10 and won their first regional championship.
“I am very proud of all that these girls have accomplished. It was no small feat to come from the seventh seed to the championship match.”
The Wooden Shoes were led by Marie Zumbahlen with five kills, Kaylie Jordan with 16 assists, Ella Tarter with 15 digs, Madison Miller and Alicen Niemerg with two blocks each and Ella Willenberg with one ace.
Effingham heads to the Trenton Wesclin Sectional Tuesday to take on Columbia at 6 p.m. The second match features Belleville Althoff Catholic against Nashville at 7.

At Strasburg
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed its own Class 1A Regional Thursday.
The Hatchets downed Oblong in the championship match, 27-25, 25-18.
“The first set was too close for comfort,” said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. “We had some errors but we cleaned up the second set. We had a big lead the second set but we started to let them creep back into the game. I was very thankful to hit that 25th point and take the championship.”
Zaida Wascher led the team in kills with nine and digs with 10. Brinli Durbin led in assists with 16 and had two block assists. Brook Schumacher and Zoey Conder also had two block assists.
The Hatchets improved to 27-11 on the season and will now head to the Argenta-Oreana Sectional to face LeRoy at 7 p.m. Tuesday. In the opener, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood Hammond and Heyworth square off at 6 p.m.
The championship is scheduled for Thursday, November 6 at 6 p.m.
The winners will advance to the championship match Thursday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
At Strasburg
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg — Durbin, 3 kills, 16 assists, 5 digs, 2 block assists; Wascher, 9 kills, 10 digs, 1 block assist; M. At St. Elmo
St. Elmo/Brownstown’s season came to a close in its own Class 1A Regional Thursday evening.
The Eagles fell to Okawville, 25-20, 25-23.
St. Elmo/Brownstown and Okawville were tied at 8-8 before the Rockets ran it out to a 15-11 lead. The Eagles came back within 18-15 but Okawville won the set 25-20.
In the second set, the Rockets moved ahead 9-8 and went on a run for a 16-11 lead.
St. Elmo/Brownstown fought back to pull within 24-23 but Okawville got the deciding point for a 25-23 victory and the match.
The Eagles finish the season with a 20-13 record.
Addie Sasse led in assists with 10 and aces with one. Presley Williams led in kills with eight. Ariana Kistler had three blocks. Mya Barker led in digs with 11.
Class 1A SEB Regional
St. Elmo/Brownstown — Williams, 8 kills, 1 block, 6 digs; P. Barker, 4 kills, 6 digs; Sasse, 2 kills, 1 ace, 1 block, 5 digs, 10 assists; Austin, 1 kill, 1 dig; Kistler, 1 kill, 3 blocks, 1 dig; M. Barker, 11 digs, 1 assist; Sapp, 1 dig, 5 assists; Claycomb, 2 digs; Miller, 1 block
At McLeansboro
Newton saw its season come to a close in the Class 2A McLeansboro Hamilton County Regional Thursday.
The Eagles lost to Carmi by 25-14, 25-11 counts.
Bierman led the team in kills with nine and blocks with one. Shull had 13 assists. Schafer and Hermann finished with five digs each.
Newton ends the season with a 21-16 record.
At McLeansboro Regional

At Casey
In the Class 1A Casey-Westfield Regional, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond came out the champion.
ALAH tallied a victory over host Casey-Westfield, 27-25, 25-20.
With the win, ALAH advances to the Argenta-Oreana Sectional and will meet Heyworth in the opening match Tuesday at 6 p.m.
In the second match, Windsor/Stew-Stras faces LeRoy at 7.
The winners will advance to the championship match Thursday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
At Nokomis
Carlyle claimed the championship of the Class 1A Nokomis Regional Thursday evening.
Carlyle won over host Nokomis, 25-22, 22-25, 28-26.
The winners will now head to the Raymond Lincolnwood Sectional and face Hardin Calhoun at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
