 St. Anthony Wins National Trail Conference Volleyball Tourney, Newton Third At Edwards Co. , T-town Consy Champs, EHS Competes At Edwards Co.

Effingham St. Anthony claimed the championship of the National Trail Conference Volleyball Tournament during the weekend.

In Friday action, St. Anthony was a 25-15, 25-13 winner over Altamont while Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg downed St. Elmo/Brownstown, 25-21, 25-23. That put those two teams into the championship Saturday while Altamont and St. Elmo/Brownstown played for third place.

In other Friday play, South Central was a 25-18, 25-7 winner over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City while Cumberland defeated Neoga 25-17, 25-20. South Central and Cumberland advanced to the consolation championship Saturday while CHBC and Neoga met for seventh place.

That produced the finals Saturday which saw St. Anthony defeating Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 25-22, 25-22 for the tournament title.

The Bulldogs were led by Cara Hatton with 11 kills and two blocks, Lilly Gannaway with 12 digs, Madelyn Gilmore with 15 assists and Nancy Ruholl with one ace.

St. Anthony is now 27-5 on the season and back in action Monday at Olney, Richland County.

Altamont defeated St. Elmo/Brownstown for third place. Avery Fleeharty and Riley Rippetoe had seven assists each for Altamont. Avery Aldrich led in kills with six. Laila Hankins led in digs with 13 and blocks with five.

In the consolation championship match, South Central was a 25-14, 25-17 winner over Cumberland.

Seventh place went to Neoga over CHBC, 25-18, 25-20.

At Albion

Newton High School placed third in the Gold Bracket at the Edwards County (Albion) Tournament Saturday.

In Pool play, Newton defeated Grayville 25-20, 25-14 and Carterville 26-28, 25-18, 15-13.

In the Gold Bracket, Newton won over Effingham, 25-22, 25-27, 15-10 then fell to Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, 25-21, 25-22 and Edwards County, 21-25, 27-25, 15-8.

At Champaign

Teutopolis competed in the Champaign St. Thomas More Invitational Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes lost both matches in pool play. They fell to Galena 25-15, 25-16 and lost to Pontiac 25-4, 24-26, 15-4.

In the afternoon, the Shoes won all three of their matches to finish as the consolation champions. They defeated Paxton-Buckley-Loda, 25-7, 25-15; Monticello 26-27, 25-23, 15-13 and Trinity 25-23, 25-16.

The Shoes now stand at 21-9 on the season.

“The 21 wins matches the win total for last season,” said T-town Coach Tim Mills. “The only other time a T-town volleyball team had back-to-back 20 win seasons was the 2017 and 2018 season. That 2018 team also won its first regional.”

The regular season comes to a close this week as Teutopolis will take on Cumberland tonight and will host Robinson during Senior Night Tuesday.

 

At Albion

Effingham competed in the Edwards County (Albion) Tournament during the weekend.

The Hearts defeated Oblong 25-20, 25-20 and Lawrenceville 25-20, 25-10.

EHS then fell to Newton 25-23, 25-27, 25-10 and lost to Edwards County, 29-25, 25-19, 15-12. EHS lost to Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, 17-15, 16-15.
