MOUNT ZION — Effingham High School opened the varsity volleyball match with a loss against Apollo Conference opponent Mount Zion, 25-17 Tuesday.
But the Hearts came back with 25-18, 25-13 set wins for the victory.
Mckenzie Love led in kills with eight and blocks with four. Berkley Pullen had 20 assists and 11 digs while Averie Wolfe led in aces with four.
In the junior varsity match, the Hearts were winners, 25-22, 25-16.
EHS fell in freshman/sophomore competition, 21-25, 25-22, 15-12.

At Altamont
Effingham St. Anthony went three sets to hand Altamont a loss in Tuesday evening play.
The Bulldogs won the opener 26-24. But Altamont came back with a 25-10 count. St. Anthony then claimed the match 25-15.
St. Anthony was led by Madelyn Gilmore with 34 assists and one ace, Nancy Ruholl with one ace and two blocks, Reese Hoene with one ace, Sophia Emmerich with one ace, Cara Hatton with 21 kills and 16 digs and Lilly Gannaway with 16 digs.
Altamont was led by Hope Roedl with two aces, Avery Aldrich with one block, Riley Rippetoe with 11 assists, Kimber Sphar with eight kills and Laila Hankins with 13 digs.
St. Anthony won the junior varsity match, 25-11, 25-13.
The Bulldogs are now 15-4 on the season and 6-0 in the National Trail Conference. St. Anthony is back in action hosting Teutopolis Thursday.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg was a winner over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in National Trail Conference action Tuesday.
The Hatchets won 25-9, 25-8 to remain unbeaten in the conference at 7-0 and stands at 14-7 overall.
“It’s nice to see everyone involved in the stat totals tonight,” said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. “An injured CHBC player takes the fun away from the win. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope she’s back on the court soon.”
Zaida Wascher led the Hatchets in aces with six and kills with eight. Mya Friese had eight kills. Brinlie Durbin led in assists with 22. Kendra Hayes had four digs. Brooke Schumacher had two solo blocks and two block assists.
Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was led by Ethel Stuckemeyer with three kills and one block, Gracie Wright with five assists and Timber Watson with five digs.
The Hatchets also won the junior varsity match, 25-7, 25-17 to improve to 12-2.
In freshman/sophomore play, Windsor/Stew-Stras won 25-15, 25-15 and is 7-5-3.

Teutopolis swept the night at Dieterich Tuesday.
The Wooden Shoes won the varsity match, 25-8, 25-15. Kaitlyn Horn led the Shoes in aces with seven and points with 11. Kayla Jordan had 17 assists. Gabby Tegler led in kills with nine and Marie Zumbahlen had nine digs.
Dieterich was led by Lydia Wohltman in digs with six and blocks with two, Kinley Will and Wohltman with one ace each, Allie Uthell with five kills and Aliza Garner with four assists.
T-town won the junior varsity match, 25-13, 25-23 and also claimed the freshman contest, 25-13, 25-13.
The Shoes are back in action Thursday at Effingham St. Anthony.

St. Elmo/Brownstown held its annual Dig Fore A Cure game Tuesday night and suffered a two set loss to Oblong, 25-20, 25-18.
Addie Sasse led in digs with eight and assists with 13. Presley Williams and Peyton Barker had six kills each. Alivia Claycomb led in blocks with two. P. Barker and Chloe Austin had five digs each.
The Eagles move to 12-8 overall and will return to National Trail Conference play Friday when they travel to North Clay.

Newton was a winner in all three matches over host Vandalia Tuesday.
Newton won the freshman contest 21-13, 19-21, 15-5 and the junior vasrity match, 25-20, 25-21.
The Eagles also claimed the varsity contest, 25-16, 25-15 to improve to 13-10.
Bierman led in aces with three and kills with seven. Shull had 11 assists, Schafer led in digs with 12. Schackmann, Schumacher and Pitcher had one block each.
The Eagles are back in action Thursday against Robinson.

The Pirates won 25-22, 25-19. Alysa Dittamore led in assists with nine and digs with seven. MacKenzie Claybaugh also had seven digs. Claybaugh led in aces with six. Madelyn McElravy had five kills.
The junior varsity team was a 25-20, 25-20 winner.
