 Effingham, Newton, WSS, Altamont, CHBC, St. Anthony, Teutopolis Win In Volleyball

CHARLESTON — Effingham swept Charleston in  varsity, junior varsity and freshman/sophomore volleyball competition Thursday.

The Hearts won the varsity match 25-17, 25-13. Mckenzie Love led in kills with 12 while Berkley Pullen had 23 assists and two aces, Mara Braun had four blocked shots and Averie Wolfe led in digs with six.

In the junior varsity match, Effingham won 25-12, 25-18 and the freshman/sophomore match, 25-21, 23-25, 15-8.

Effingham is back in action Saturday in the Charleston Varsity Tournament and the junior varsity will head to Terre Haute for a tournament.

At Casey

Newton captured victories over Casey-Westfield Thursday.

The Eagles won the varsity match 25-14, 25-19. Bierman led in aces with four and kills with six. Shull had eight assists. Hermann had 15 digs. Schackmann led in blocks with four.

The Eagles also captured the junior varsity win. They lost the opening set 25-23 but came back with 25-23, 15-10 tallies for the match.

Newton is back in action Saturday at the St. Anthony Tournament.

At Casey

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg won over St. Elmo/Brownstown in National Trail Conference play.

The Hatchets won the varsity match, 25-17, 25-21 to improve to 4-0 in the conference, 7-5 overall.

“We got a little confidence back tonight after our loss last night,” said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. “We still struggled here and there, but our hitting looked much stronger and more consistent. Zaida’s getting more comfortable in that position. We are still timid with three freshmen on the floor but they will set there. Brooke is back from her injury and looking good. Mya is just a dominant n force for us. She does a great job putting the ball down. Brinlie is leading the offense nicely by running the court.”

Mya Friese led in aces with five and kills with 10. Brinlie Durbin had 20 assists. Brooke Schumacher had two block assists.

The Hatchets won the junior varsity match, 25-23, 25-16 and is 5-2.

In freshman/sophomore play, Windsor/Stew-Stras won 25-22, 25-12 and is 5-4-2.

At Strasburg

Altamont beat Cisne in three sets. The Indians won 25-22 before Cisne took the second set 25-19. Altamont then won the match 25-20.

Hope Roedl led the winners in digs with 18. Riley Rippetoe led in blocks with three. Avery Aldrich had five kills. Laila Hankins led in digs with 19. Avery Fleeharty had 12 assists.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City pulled out a three-set National Trail Conference victory over North Clay Thursday.

The Bobcats lost the opener 25-17 but came back with 25-23, 29-27 scores for the match.

Allison Shields led the winners in kills with 12. Ethel Stuckemeyer led in aces with three and digs with 19. Gracie Wright had 21 assists.

North Clay was a winner in the junior varsity match, 25-15, 25-8. North Clay won the first freshman/sophomore set 25-11. CHBC came back with a 25-20 victory in the second set.

At Cowden

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony had a non-conference matchup Thursday with Marshall and won 25-10, 25-12.

Cara Hatton led the Bulldogs in kills with 10 and blocks with three. Madelyn Gilmore had 15 assists and seven digs. Lilly Gannaway, RayAnna Nuxoll and Reese Hoene had one ace each.

The Bulldogs are now 9-2 on the season and will play host to the St. Anthony Invitational Saturday.

St. Anthony also won over Marshall in junior varsity play, 25-23, 25-8.

At Effingham

Teutopolis improved its record to 9-3 on the season with a victory over Neoga Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes won 25-20, 25-15. Kaylie Jordan led in digs with 10, assists with 20, aces with three and points with seven. Ella Tarter also had seven points. Madison Miller had nine kills. Tarter led in digs with 10.

Neoga was led by Chloe Frankie with eight assists and seven digs. Madelynn Frankie had four kills and three blocks. T-town also claimed the junior varsity match, 25-17, 25-19 and is 8-1 on the season.

Martinsville came calling and downed Dieterich in two sets Thursday.

The Bluestreaks won 25-23, 25-25.

Dieterich was led by Mariah Muhs with six digs, Aliza Garner with nine assists, Allie Uthell with three blocks and Kinley Will with four digs and two aces.
