 St. Anthony Wins Girls Class 1A Track Sectional Championship, Area Competitors Advance To State

NEWTON — Effingham St. Anthony High School claimed the championship of the Class 1A Newton Girls Track Sectional Wednesday.

The Bulldogs tallied 136.5 points followed by Newton 133, Teutopolis 64, Altamont 51, Pana 43, Vandalia 43, Cumberland 40, North Clay 29, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 24, Brownstown/St. Elmo 22, Neoga 22, Nokomis 20, Red Hill (Bridgeport) 19.5, Lawrenceville 16, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 13 and Flora 10.

First and second place finishers along with any reaching State qualifying standards advance to the State Track Meet Thursday, May 22 through Saturday, May 24 at Eastern Illinois University.

Reese Hoene was a huge part of the Bulldogs team title. Hoene captured four first place finishes and will advance to State in those events.

Hoene won the 100 with a time of 12.65 seconds. She also nabbed the 200 victory in 25.99 seconds, the 400 in 58.23 seconds and the long jump at 5.60 meters. She broke two of her own records in the long jump and the 400.

Other victories for the Bulldogs were two titles by Aubrey Denning who won the 800 with a time of 2:15.26 minutes and the 1600 in 5:01.84 minutes, and two wins by Liv Hoene who claimed the 100 hurdles with a personal record time of 16.52 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 50.04. She also placed third in the pole vault at 2.91 meters which is a personal record. The height reached the State qualifying standard.

Isabella Keller claimed the 3200 with a time of 10:53.05 minutes and was second in the 1600 in 5:06.41.

The St. Anthony 4×400 relay team of L. Hoene, Cara Hatton, Audrey LaSarge and Denning took second in 4:21.41.

Cara Hatton claimed second in the high jump at 1.52 meters.

“It was a complete team win,” said St. Anthony Coach Randy Blake. “Everyone contributed and I am so proud of the entire team.”

Altamont’s Abigail Weishaar took second in the 200 in 27.06 and was third in the 400 at 1:01.17. She will advance to State in both those events. Ada Roberts claimed second in the long jump at 5.00 meters and will head to State.

Altamont’s 4×100 relay team finished second in 51.87 seconds and will advance. Team members were Gabriella Weishaar, Roberts, Katie Tedrick and A. Weishaar. The 4×200 relay team of Roberts, Keely Fleeharty, Tedrick and G. Weishaar finished second to advance in 1:52.22 minutes.

Newton swept all four relay events to advance to State

The Eagles won the 4×100 relay in 49.95 seconds. Team members were Makayla McVicar, Morgan Schafer, Sydney Kinder and Stella Schackmann. Newton also won the 4×200 relay in 1:46.64 minutes with McVicar, Schafer, Kinder and Schackmann.

The 4×400 relay with Karasyn Martin, Camryn Martin, Kinder and McVicar won in 4:16.93 minutes. The 4×800 relay team of Layna Marshall, C. Martin, K. Martin and Grace Schumacher won in 10:55.53.

Advancing individually were Schackmann who finished second in the 100 in 12.92 seconds, K. Martin who won the pole vault at 3.58 meters and C. Martin who finished second at 3.51 and Kinder who claimed the triple jump at 11.01 meters.

Teutopolis High School’s Adrienne Koester finished second in the 800 in 2:23.15 minutes to advance.  Samantha Habing finished fourth in the pole vault at 29.76 meters and met the qualifying standard. Also advancing as an individual was Ella Neihls in the triple jump at 10.75 meters. for second place.

The Wooden Shoes’ 4×800 relay team of Macy Petersen, Madeline Zane, Claire Overbeck and Pearl Huber finished second in 11:20.45.

North Clay sends Brooke Koelm to State. She finished second in the 3200 in 12:29.11 minutes.

Cumberland’s Hannah Shoemaker captured second in the 100 hurdles in 17.00 and was second in the 300 hurdles in 51.04 to advance.
