MATTOON — Effingham St. Anthony High School competed in the Mattoon Tennis Tournament Saturday.
“It was a 16 team tournament,” said St. Anthony Coach Darlene Esker. “A long day of tennis and a lot of good tennis.”
Max Gillenwater and Mason Jones finished third in the No. 2 doubles spot. The duo won their opener, 6-0, 6-0 then claimed the second match 7-5, 6-3. They fell in the third contest but won the final matchup, 6-4, 6-3.
Charlie Bierman finished fourth at the No. 2 singles while Drake Brown ended tied for fifth at the No. 1 singles.
Bierman won his opening two singles matches, 6-3, 6-3 over a Maroa-Forysth player then downed a Mattoon player, 6-3, 6-1 before falling in the final two matches.
Brown tied for fifth at No. 1 singles. He won over a Paris player, 2-6, 6-1, 11-9 then lost in the second match 6-0, 6-0 to a St. Thomas More player. He fought back to win 8-2 over Casey-Westfield and took the final match, also 8-2 over a player from Maroa-Forsyth.
