Effingham High School held off Teutopolis by a 5-3 count in softball competition heard Tuesday on KJ Country 102.3.
The Hearts edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead. With one out, Ryley Engel doubled and went to third on a passed ball. Sidney Donaldson and Natalie Armstrong drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Mya Harvey then drew a walk that scored Engel.
EHS moved the score to 2-0 in the second. Madi Kirk was hit by a pitch and Saige Althoff followed with a single. A ground out by Jerzi Bierman scored Kirk.
The lead was pushed to 4-0 in the third. With one out, Harvey drew a walk, stole second and went to third on a passed ball. Keagan Koenig then doubled Harvey home. A single by Kirk pushed Koenig across the plate.
The Wooden Shoes put Olivia Wermert on in the second with a single but the next three batters went down in order. In the third, Alyssa Tipton led off with a single and Chloe Hoene was hit by a pitch. But the Hearts buckled down and got the next three outs to end the threat.
The Shoes finally dented the plate in the fourth. With two outs, Kayleigh Zerrusen drew a walk and CJ Apke followed with a home run and the Shoes stood within 4-2.
The Hearts came back in the sixth to tally their final run. With one out Althoff doubled. A sacrifice by Bierman pushed Althoff to third and a single by Engel then brought her home and the Hearts led 5-2.
T-town mounted a rally in the seventh. It started when CJ Apke who drew a walk and stole second. But the next two batters were taken out. Kera Hartke followed with a single that scored Apke. EHS buckled down to get the final out to end the contest.
EHS finished with seven hits led by Engel and Althoff with a single and double each. Engel had an RBI. Koenig added a double and an RBI and Harvey and Kirk had a single and an RBI each.
Teutopolis had four hits led by Apke with her home run and two RBI and Hartke with single and an RBI.
Althoff picked up the pitching victory, allowing three runs on four hits, two walks and striking out two.
At Effingham

At Dieterich
Grace Lemke tossed a one-hitter as Altamont edged Dieterich by a 3-1 count Tuesday.
Lemke finished with 12 strikeouts in the contest and gave up only one walk.
Meanwhile, the two teams went scoreless through the first three innings before Altamont tallied a run in the top of the fourth.
Dieterich tied in the sixth, sending the contest into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Altamont scored two runs to pull out the victory.
The Indians had six hits led by Laila Hankins with a double, Ella Nelson with two singles, Madison Tonn with a single and two RBI and Sophia Long with a single and an RBI.
Dieterich was led by Brittney Niemerg with the lone hit, a single and an RBI.
Altamont committed four errors in the contest while Dieterich finished with two.
Altamont is 6-2 in the National Trail Conference and 17-8 overall.

At Strasburg
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg handled Cumberland by a 10-1 count in Tuesday competition.
The Hatchets banged out 14 hits in the contest as Kendra Hayes had two singles and drove in three runs while Clarissa Johnson and Katelyn VonBehrens finished with two singles and two RBI each. Samantha Hayes had two singles and an RBI and Ellie Wittenberg and Cameron Carey tallied a single and an RBI each.
Windsor/Stew-Stras moved into a 2-0 first inning lead, tallied five in the third, one in the fifth and finished with two in the sixth.
Cumberland was led in hitting by Mia Holsapple with a double. Noraa Cross added an RBI.
S. Hayes went five innings for the victory on the mound. She gave up one run on four hits, walked two and struck out six. K. Hayes came on to finish out the final two innings, giving up one hit.
Windsor/Stew-Stras is back in action today against North Clay (Louisville).

Newton trailed Shelbyville by a 3-1 opening inning count Tuesday. The Rams then pushed their lead to 5-3 in the third.
But, here came the Eagles. Coach Sara Beam’s squad broke free with a seven-run fifth, tacked on four more in the sixth and two in the seventh for a 16-5 victory.
Newton’s bats were hot with 18 hits. Addy O’Dell had a double, triple, home run and five RBI. Bailee Frichtl finished with a single, double, triple and two RBI. Audrie Reich added a single, double and an RBI, Claire Probst three singles and an RBI. Avery Mulvey had a double and an RBI, Camryn Martin two singles and an RBI and Allie Stanley two singles. Lexie Ghast finished with an RBI.
Lexie Ghast came on in the fourth to pick up the pitching victory. She allowed no runs on three hits, one walk while striking out four.
