NEWTON — Newton High School edged Altamont, 2-0 in softball competition Friday.
The Eagles took a 1-0 opening inning lead and tacked on another run in the sixth.
Newton finished with three hits led by Addy O’Dell with a single and triple and Camryn Martin with a single and an RBI.
The Eagles’ Amelia Collins threw a one-hitter. She did not give up a walk and struck out 12.
Grace Lemke had the lone hit for Altamont with a single. Lemke took the loss on the mound, giving up three hits, two walks and striking out nine.
Altamont finished with two errors in the contest.

At Mattoon
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg took part in the Mattoon Round Robin and picked up a victory and suffered a loss in the championship contest during the weekend.
The Hatchets easily handled Mattoon by a 12-0 tally in five innings via the 10-run rule in the opening contest.
Windsor/Stew-Stras went on a hitting spree against two Mattoon pitchers. The Hatchets finished with 13 hits and seven of those were for extra bases. Cameron Carey led the way with a double, triple and an RBI while Samantha Hayes had a single, double and three RBI, Alaira Friese and Mya Friese a single, double and two RBI each, Kendra Hayes with a triple and two RBI, Clarissa Johnson with a double and Ellie Wittenberg with a single and two RBI.
K. Hayes went two innings for the pitching victory. She allowed three hits, no walks and struck out one. S. Hayes came on to finish out the final three innings, allowing one hit, giving up one walk and striking out six.
In the second contest, Marion pounded St. Joseph-Ogden, 15-5.
That win moved Windsor/Stew-Stras into the championship game against Marion and the Hatchets fell by a 2-0 count.
Marion scored a single run in the fourth and the second run in the sixth.
Windsor/Stew-Stras had three hits led by S. Hayes, Johnson and K. Hayes with a single each.
Marion finished with six hits. The squad improved to 11-4 on the season.
Windsor/Stew-Stras is now 14-3.
In the third place contest, St. Joseph-Ogden trounced Mattoon, 16-4.

At Effingham
Champaign Central came calling at Effingham and handed the Hearts a 13-1 loss Friday.
The game ended in the fifth via the 10-run rule. Central tallied single runs in the first, fourth and fifth and five runs in the second and third innings.
Central finished with 14 hits in the contest.
Effingham had four hits led by Keagyn Koenig with a solo home run and Ryley Engel, Sidney Donaldson and Madison Kirk with a double each.
H. Helm threw the four-hitter for Central. She did not give up a walk and struck out 10.
