 Newton, Teutopolis Win, Altamont Claims Win, Drops Two Losses, Area High School Softball Roundup

NEWTON — Newton High School moved into a 3-0 lead in the second inning against South Central in softball action Friday and came out a 7-3 winner.

Despite being outhit by a 9-7 count, the Eagles pushed their lead to 4-1 in the third. South Central fought back to pull within 4-3 in the top of the fifth but Newton tallied three more runs in the bottom of that frame.

Paige Wagner hit a single, home run and had two RBI for the Eagles. Emma Brooks added a single and double while Allie Hermann finished with a double and two RBI. Audria Reich and Lexie Ghast added a single and an RBI each. Jacee Dhom finished with an RBI.

Karly Deckard went 3.1 innings for the victory on the mound. She gave up one run, two hits, three walks and struck out three.

South Central’s Kinlee Thompson hit a home run and finished with two RBI. Maddie Peddicord and Addy Ruholl had two singles each. Perci Reid had a single and an RBI.

At Newton

At Sullivan

Teutopolis made short work against Sullivan in a Friday contest.

The Wooden Shoes ripped out to a 10-0 opening inning lead and finished the game in the fourth, 20-1.

The Shoes put the bat on the ball and finished with 20 hits. Jersey Gaddis led the way with a single, double, home run and six RBI. Kera Hartke had two singles, a double and an RBI, Alyssa Tipton a single, double and four RBI, Malea Helmink a single, double and two RBI Chloe Hoene a single and double, Karissa Neihls a double and an RBI, Malllory Bloemer two singles and an RBI and Kylie Borries a single and two RBI.

Helmink recorded her 100th career RBI.

Tipton went the four innings, striking out 10. She gave up one run, three hits and three walks.

At Toledo

Flora came calling and went home with an 11-7 victory over Cumberland Friday.

The Wolves moved into a 3-0 opening inning lead and led 5-4 after four innings. But Cumberland came back to tie in the fifth. Flora moved ahead 6-5 in the top of the sixth and then moved that lead to 11-5 in the top of the seventh. Cumberland fought back but could muster only two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

It was a hitter’s game as Flora finished with 16 and Cumberland 13.

The Pirates were led by Kada Miles with four singles and an RBI, Kinley McMechan with a triple and an RBI, Mia Holsapple with two singles and three RBI, Shelby Kingery and Jude Miller with two singles each and Ashton Tolen with a single and an RBI.

At Toledo

At Altamont

Altamont had a big week. The Indians defeated Nokomis, 10-2 in a Friday contest.

The Indians moved into a 3-1 opening inning lead. Nokomis came back with a run in the third. But Altamont had seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Both teams had eight hits. Altamont was led by Avery Fleeharty with three singles and an RBI, Ella Nelson a single, double and two RBI, Jocelyn Pearcy with a single and two RBI and Adilyn Schnarre with a single and an RBI.

Sophia Long tossed all seven innings, giving up two runs on eight hits. She did not walk a batter and struck out six.

Altamont then took on Okawville Saturday and fell 14-4 in five innings.

The lone runs for the Indians came in the fifth. Altamont outhit Okawville by a 9-7 count.

Nelson had two doubles and an RBI while Becca Swank had a triple and an RBI. Sophia Long finished with two singles and an RBI and Schnarre had a single and an RBI.

Breese Central blanked Altamont 10-0 in five innings.

Altamont finished with four hits and had four errors. Laila Hankins had two singles for the Indians.

At Edwardsville

The only runs in this contest came in the sixth inning as Edwardsville finished with a 2-0 victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Saturday.

The two teams played through five innings without scoring. Edwardsville had two hits.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg had five hits led by Kalia Friese with two singles and Mckenna Corrie with a double.

Kendra Hayes tossed a two-hitter with only one walk while striking out three but ended up with the loss.

“Kendra threw an awesome game today,” said WSS Coach Linda Krumeich. “Unfortunately we couldn’t string enough hits together to push any runs across.”

At Edwardsville

At Farina

South Central fell twice in Saturday action in its own round robin.

The Cougars dropped a loss to Breese Central, 1-0. The lone run came in the sixth inning.

South Central had three hits, singles by Annie Ruholl, Maddie Peddicord and Perci Reid.

Okawville edged South Central 7-6 with the winning run coming in the bottom of the seventh.

The two teams were tied at 2-2 after three innings. South Central held a 4-3 lead in the top of the third but Okawville came back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. South Central tied in the sixth with two runs.

A. Ruholl and Peddicord had a double each. Peddicord added an RBI. Lauren Johnson had two singles and two RBI while Kinlee Thompson finished with two singles and an RBI and Amelia Montes added two singles.
