CARBONDALE — Newton High School ran into a buzz saw at the Class 2A Carbondale Softball Super-Sectional Monday.
Carterville’s Caidence Phillips, an All-State pitcher, tossed a no-hitter as the Lions blanked Newton 8-0.
Phillips hurled a complete game, striking out 14.
Carterville scored two runs in the first inning and pushed that to 3-0 in the fourth. Carterville then scored five more runs in the sixth, ending the scoring.
Phillips struck out the first nine Eagles players she faced.
Meanwhile offensively, Kendall McCalla hit a two-run homer, Taryn Ford a home run and Savannah Gibbs had two singles, a double and two RBI.
Carterville advances to the Class 2A State Tournament Friday to meet North Boone at 3 p.m. Beecher will take on Auburn Co-op at 5:30. The winners advance to the championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. while the losers will play for third place at 4:30.
