CASEY — Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg battled to the end but Casey-Westfield came through with a 1-0 victory in its own Class 1A Sectional Friday.
The Hatchets and Warriors went through nine scoreless innings. In the top of the 10th, Casey-Westfield was a winner and Windsor/Stew-Stras saw its outstanding season close.
Clarissa Johnson hit a double in the second inning for Windsor/Stew-Stras but was left stranded. The Hatchets put runners on base in the third as Katlyn VonBehrens drew walk and was sacrificed over by Cameron Carey. But the Hatchets couldn’t get the run home.
Ellie Wittenberg drew a a walk in the fourth and stole second but was left stranded. In the ninth, Stew-Stras again put runners on base. with one out, S. Hayes singled but a fielder’s choice on a grounder hit by Kendra Hayes got Samantha Hayes out and the final out came on a strikeout.
The winning run came on a solo home run by Ava Goble with one out. Tristan Ring and Ella Whitacre finished with a double each.
Casey-Westfield ended with five hits and was aided by two Hatchet errors.
Goble picked up the pitching win, tossing a three-hitter with two walks and four strikeouts.
S. Hayes suffered the tough-luck loss. She went all 10 innings, allowing five hits, while walking only one and striking out 15.
The Hatchets finished with three hits led by Clarissa Johnson with a double and S. Hayes and Katelyn VonBehrens with a single each.
