Effingham High School hosted Carbondale in a regular season softball contest Friday and fell by a 7-3 count.
Carbondale banged out 16 hits in the game and were aided by three EHS errors.
The Terriers edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead and led 3-1 in the fourth. Carbondale tacked on a single run in the fifth and three more in the seventh.
The Hearts made a comeback attempt in the bottom of the seventh, but scored only two runs.
EHS had five hits led by Keagyn Koenig with two doubles and an RBI, Natalie Armstrong with a double, Madison Kirk with a single and an RBI and Tessa Raddatz with an RBI.
A. Thompson was the winning pitcher for Carbondale, going all seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits, one walk and striking out four.
The Hearts will head into Class 3A Regional action Wednesday at the Marion Regional. EHS, seeded No. 3, will take on No. 5 seeded Carbondale at 4:30 p.m.
The regional opens Tuesday with No. 2 Marion against No. 8 Herrin at 4:30 p.m. The regional championship is scheduled for Friday at 4:30 p.m.
